The Friends Who Remain, 2026
Technique : Handwoven mixed media
Size : W 180 x H 140 cm
Created for a life-long friend and early supporter of the artist, whose connection reaches back to early childhood, this work reflects on the relationships that endure through different seasons of life.
Handwoven from reclaimed yarns, old cassette tapes, and strands of gold yarn left over from previous projects, the work brings together materials that have travelled through many earlier forms. Rather than concealing their histories, it allows them to remain visible within the surface, carrying traces of memory, time, and transformation.
The title acknowledges those rare friendships that endure beyond circumstance. Some people enter our lives briefly, while others remain present through moments of uncertainty, celebration, disappointment, and renewal. Like the reclaimed materials woven together here, such relationships are shaped gradually over time, strengthened through care, patience, and shared experience.
The gold threads emerge quietly between layers of texture, not as symbols of wealth, but as markers of gratitude. They recognise the presence of those who continue to offer encouragement, companionship, and belief across the changing tides of life.
