SEA GHOST, 2020
When the crew of a fishing trawler decides a net which has outlived its usefulness, they often dump the nets overboard rather than bringing them backto port. These “ghost nets” float aimlessly ensnaring and killing sea life, to the point where it becomes heavy enough to sink to the ocean floor. Scavengers like crabs feed on the carrion, freeing the net to float back into the currents to continue this deadly cycle. If these ghost nets had spirits, then we can imagine them being freed from this tragic cycle, which results in this colourful, joyful depiction of transcendence.

As a contemporary weaver, Vinyaratn redefines the process and materials of tapestry by utilising new materials and forms. Her artistic practice arises from her environmental consciousness within this contemporary world, nurtured with the intensive weaving training in Europe It is often characterised by her jungle of concepts, fostered with her thorough research on traditional Thai textiles and patterns. However, her practice is not about merely creating objects, but the life revolving around the making. To her, the ‘weaving in making’ is where the conscientiousness, curiosity, and honesty prevails.
To commit her thoughts on environment, she experimentally self-makes the raw materials for her weaving from wasted manmade materials. She boldly expands the way of weaving by combining materials as diverse as possible in medium like the upcycled yarn, hand-spun paper, PET ribbons and ground sea waste in stockings. To fulfill her thoughts on community, she teams up the village people in Northeast part of Thailand to hand spin the paper from the corporate document, she works with labours living near the beach to collect and grind the plastic sea wastes, and also shred the used recycled bottles into PET ribbons.
